Hatchlings

I don't think that I have posted about my Rhode Island Red hen going broody. I know that I have complained about none of my hens feeling motherly this year, well one finally did. She is a big, old RIR and she decided to start a family around 21 days ago. Dingy me forgot to write down the date that she started setting. So I have been checking her nest everyday to see if there are any chicks. I thought that her time should be about up.

I set 6 large eggs and 12 banty eggs under her. I know that my banty eggs are fertilized but am not sure about the standard eggs. Rocky still isn't doing his job. Last night I checked and had one banty chick that was all hatched out, fluffy and cute. I haven't checked her today yet.

I am going to have to move her and the nest to a safer location because the nest is so high and the chicklets can fall out.

Congratulations on your hens starting to go broody! Mine never have yet, but I'm hopeful for the future when we get our new barn finished. Thanks for your words of encouragement on my injuries! I'm doing better. Hoping to be able to get to the barn when Lizzie FINALLY gives birth. She is taking her sweet time in this birthing. It's been 3 days of contractions, but she hasn't started pushing yet, although I keep thinking it will start any time.

Chicks are so much fun. I love watching the new life starting. We just hatched a couple guinea keets under a broody hen and I had to move her today because the nest boxes were too high for the babies.

For ever it seems, I've wanted a few chickens and goats. I now am the proud owner of 22 baby chicks.
When I get that under my belt, I'll consider goats. Until then, it's fun to read adventures like yours.
All the best with your babies.
